Subclass 173 is a temporary visa that allows parents to live in Australia for up to two years. During this period, they may apply for the permanent Subclass 143 visa without needing to leave the country. Applicants can also apply directly for the permanent Subclass 143 visa.
These visas require a higher contribution to the Australian government to help cover healthcare and other services, allowing for faster processing compared to non-contributory parent visas.

Key Differences

- Subclass 173 (Temporary): Valid for 2 years, allows stay, work, and study in Australia. No access to government support or Medicare. Must apply for Subclass 143 before expiry.
- Subclass 143 (Permanent): Grants permanent residency, full work and study rights, access to Medicare, and eligibility for citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for either Subclass 173 or Subclass 143:
- You must be the parent of an eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
- You must pass the ‘Balance of Family Test’ (at least half of your children must be Australian residents)
- You must have an approved sponsor (usually your child or their spouse)
- You must meet health and character requirements
- You must not have any debts to the Australian Government
- For Subclass 173: You must be outside Australia at the time of application and decision
- For Subclass 143: You may apply from outside or, in some cases, from inside Australia with appropriate bridging arrangements
